A touching and friendly meeting, the language barrier was not a problem for this sympathetic family who exchanged with the &#8220;Iwuysiens&#8221; who attended the event. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4Y8ZcJaI82Y\" target=\"_blank\">Watch the video of the reception<\/a><br><br>Le 22 Septembre dernier (2017), 19 membres de la famille du Capitaine William Lucas Hayes (d\u00e9cor\u00e9 de la Military Cross pour un acte de bravoure r\u00e9alis\u00e9 lors de la bataille d&#8217; Iwuy le 11 octobre 1918 alors qu&#8217; il \u00e9tait Lieutenant) nous ont rendu visite. Un merci particulier \u00e0 Me Peggy Hayes Looby qui est la plus jeune fille du Lieutenant et qui a fait le voyage pour suivre les traces de son p\u00e8re.<br><br>Dear Madam, dear Sir,<br><br>We are particularly pleased to welcome the family of Lieutenant William Lucas Hayes who participated 99 years ago to the liberation of our village on 11 October1918. Special thanks to Mrs Peggy Hayes Looby who is the youngest daughter of the Lieutenant and who made the journey to follow his father&#8217;s footsteps.<br><br>Cet homme a qui nous devons le plus grand respect obtint la Military Cross pour l\u2019 action suivante\u00a0:<br><br>We owe the greatest respect to this man who obtained the Military Cross for the following action:<br><br><br>\u00c0 Iwuy, le 11 octobre 1918, lors d&#8217;une attaque, alors que sa compagnie subissait le feu particuli\u00e8rement intense de l&#8217; ennemi, tous les officiers de son unit\u00e9 furent mis hors service ou tu\u00e9s. Bien que bless\u00e9 lui m\u00eame, il prit le commandement de son d\u00e9tachement qui devint la cible des tirs d&#8217; une mitrailleuse ennemie retranch\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#8217;int\u00e9rieur d&#8217; une habitation. Il parvint \u00e0 se glisser seul dans la maison et il la fit exploser. Il se pr\u00e9cipita ensuite sur le poste d&#8217; ou provenaient les tirs et il tua tous les servants. Il a montr\u00e9 au cours de cet acte un courage extraordinaire, et son exemple a inspir\u00e9 tous ses hommes.<br><br><br>At Iwuy on 11 October 1918 during an attack his company came under particularly severe fire and all the officers were killed or wounded. Although himself wounded, he took command, and when the advance was held up by an enemy machine-gun post in a house, he crept forward alone and bombed the house, rushing the post, and himself killing the entire garrison. He displayed splendid courage, and his example inspired all his men.<br><br><br>WL Hayes \u00e9tait n\u00e9 \u00e0 Oswestry dans le Shropshire en Angleterre le 21 f\u00e9vrier 1888. Il \u00e9migra au Canada en 1903 ou il travaillait en tant que cuisinier dans les exploitations foresti\u00e8res au cours de l\u2019 hiver, et \u00e9tait agriculteur pendant l\u2019 \u00e9t\u00e9. Il est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 Saskatoon dans le Saskatchewan le 21 Janvier 1959.<br><br><br>William Lucas Hayes was born in Oswestry, Shropshire, England on 21 February 1888. He moved to Canada in 1906, where he worked as a cook in logging camps during the winter and farmed during the summer. He died in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan 21 January 1959.<br><br>Il s\u2019 engagea \u00e0 Winnipeg en tant que simple soldat volontaire le 5 F\u00e9vrier 1915 dans le 28\u00e8me bataillon d\u2019 infanterie canadien. He embarked in Montreal aboard the SS Northland with his companions in arms on May 29, 1915. . The boat arrived at its destination on June 7, 1915 to the port of Plymouth in England. . On 17 september 1915, the 28th embarked at Folkestone to reach France at the port of Boulogne.<br><br>Il obtint en septembre 1916 une qualification de grenadier dans une section sp\u00e9ciale cr\u00e9er \u00e0 l\u2019 int\u00e9rieur du bataillon. Entre d\u00e9cembre 1917 et mai 1918 il regagna l\u2019 Angleterre pour effectuer une formation et acc\u00e9der au grade d\u2019 officier. Il revint sur les champs de bataille avec le grade de Lieutenant. Il participa \u00e0 toutes les batailles\u00a0: Ypres et la Somme en 1916, Vimy, Passhendaele en 1917, Arras, Amiens et enfin la p\u00e9riode appel\u00e9e les 100 jours en 1918 pendant laquelle l\u2019 arm\u00e9e Canadienne joua un r\u00f4le essentiel pour la victoire finale. C\u2019 est au cours des 100 jours qu\u2019 eut lieu la bataille d\u2019 Iwuy qui fit \u00e0 elle seule 143 victimes dans les rangs du 28\u00e8me bataillon, sachant qu\u2019 un bataillon quand il \u00e9tait au complet \u00e9tait compos\u00e9 de 1200 hommes.<br><br>He obtained in September 1916 a bomber qualification in a special section created inside the battalion. Between December 1917 and May 1918 he returned to England to train and become an officer. He went back to the battlefield with the rank of Lieutenant. He took part in all the battles: Ypres and the Somme in 1916, Vimy, Passhendaele in 1917, Arras, Amiens and finally the period called the 100 days in 1918 during which the Canadian army played an essential role for the final victory. It was during the 100 days that the battle of Iwuy took place. During the fights there were 143 casualities in the ranks of the 28th battalion, knowing that a battalion when it was complete was composed of 1,200 men.<br><br><br>Le 15 et 16 Septembre 1916, les tanks sont utilis\u00e9s pour la premi\u00e8re fois \u00e0 la bataille de Flers Courcelettes contre l\u2019 arm\u00e9e allemande. L\u2019 arm\u00e9e allemande utilise les tanks pour la derni\u00e8re fois de la guerre \u00e0 Iwuy le 11 Octobre 1918. William Lucas Hayes aura assist\u00e9 \u00e0 ces deux \u00e9v\u00e8nements.<br><br>On 15 and 16 September 1916, tanks were used for the first time at the Battle of Flers Courcelettes against the German Army. The German army uses the tanks for the last time of the war at Iwuy on October 11, 1918. William Lucas Hayes attended these two events.<br><br>Apr\u00e8s l\u2019 armistice le 28\u00e8me bataillon arriva en Allemagne et William fut envoy\u00e9 avec un autre officier en avant garde le 4 d\u00e9cembre 1918 pour trouver parmi la population allemande un h\u00e9bergement pour sa compagnie.<br><br>After the armistice the 28th Battalion arrived in Germany and William was sent with another officer as scouts on 4 December 1918 to find among the German population an accommodation for his company.<br><br>Il traversa le pont du Rhin \u00e0 Bonn et entra dans la premi\u00e8re maison qui se trouvait apr\u00e8s ce pont.<br>Il informa Frau Eisenkramer, la propri\u00e9taire des lieux que sa compagnie s\u00e9journerait dans sa maison pendant quelques temps. Frau Eisenkramer avait une fille de 18 ans pr\u00e9nomm\u00e9e Johanna Hedwig Maria qui devint la derni\u00e8re conqu\u00eate allemande de notre officier Canadien, \u00e0 moins que ce ne fut cette fr\u00eale et d\u00e9licate allemande qui fit la conqu\u00eate de William Lucas Hayes. Mais ceci n\u2019 est qu\u2019une question de point de vue.<br>Cette histoire se termine sur cette r\u00e9flexion optimiste \u00e0 m\u00e9diter, finalement l\u2019 amour est plus fort que la guerre.<br><br><br>He informed Frau Eisenkramer, the owner of the premises that her company would stay in her house for some time. Frau Eisenkramer had an 18-year-old girl named Johanna Hedwig Maria who became the last German conquest of our Canadian officer, unless it was this frail and delicate German young girl who conquered William Lucas Hayes.
